Great non-fiction, longform articles to send you down a rabbit hole and possibly learn something new!
Myth: Vegetable Oils Are Bad for You by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD for Nutrivore
"Seed oils" have become a political talking point recently, especially because of RFK Jr.
The moral of the story I got from this is there's no science to back up demonizing that type of food, but if you're going to cook something, be conscious of it's burn point.
"Hard Times Don’t Make Strong Soldiers" by Bret Devereaux for Foreign Policy
"What Happens When Sister Cities Break Up?" by Jonathan Carey for Atlas Obscura
Fascinating look at "sister cities" and diplomacy.
"Janet Yellen Likes Rocks. Foreign Diplomats Keep Giving Her Stamps." by Andrew Duehren for The Wall Street Journal
"The Moral Logic of Humanitarian Intervention" by Dexter Filkins for The New Yorker
In one of the weirdest turns of the frequency bias, I had read this article after debating to read her memoir in the same weekend as a I watched a youtuber spiral in anxiety after reading "A Problem from Hell" and I went on a date with a man who studied and idolized Samantha Power after studying global relations at American University in the Obama era. I think this article is great and I feel bad for the youtuber who launched herself into a book slump from a book that will likely end up on "If Books Could Kill."
"Losing Earth: The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change" by Nathaniel Rich for NYT Mag
I didn't enjoy this article at all, it feels like a textbook from an old international law class, but it might be interesting to you. Here's a study guide to go with it.
“Asian Americans Are Still Caught in the Trap of the ‘Model Minority’ Stereotype. And It Creates Inequality for All” By Viet Thanh Nguyen for Time
As a companion piece, Time also published the shorter “The Asian American Response to Black Lives Matter Is Part of a Long, Complicated History” by Candy Lang
