More Context:

The Hills was an American reality series that aired for six seasons on MTV from May 31, 2006, until July 13, 2010. The partially scripted show followed the personal and professional lives of young women navigating Los Angeles’ fashion and entertainment scenes. Centered on Lauren Conrad as a spin-off of Laguna Beach, the show also followed her friends Heidi Montag, Kristin Cavallari, Audrina Patridge, and Whitney Port. The Hills became known for its close-up look of "valley girls" and LA dating culture (notably featuring Brody Jenner and Spencer Pratt). Many of the women are successful even if they didn't stay friends. Heidi Montag did release an album (and is still married to Spencer) while Lauren has a successful lifestyle brands, even though she never did go to Paris with Vogue magazine.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, located at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland. It was built to smash subatomic particles together at nearly the speed of light in order to study fundamental physics. When it was turned on September 10, 2008, the LHC got enormous global attention because of unfounded rumors that it might create a black hole and destroy the Earth. Scientists quickly reassured the public that it was perfectly safe, but the viral panic became a talking point across media and entertainment shows.

I didn't watch The Hills but I did watch The Soup, E!’s satirical clip show hosted by Joel McHale. The pop culture review show covered The Hills segment about the Large Hadron Collider. In the Hills scene, cast members vaguely mention the collider and cosmic destruction while gossiping about their friends’ whereabouts, treating a monumental scientific event (and possible black hole) as background noise to their social lives. McHale mocked the cast’s shallow confusion. The juxtaposition of the world ending and gossiping about Lauren is hilarious. I'm so happy to now have a Youtube link to share with my friends (and blog readers!).

Do you remember the media jokes about the LHC being turned on?
